The Historic Tryon Palace
If you’re visiting New Bern, North Carolina, be sure to check out Tryon Palace. This historic building was originally built in the late 1760s and is now known as the Governor’s Palace. It served as the first permanent capital of North Carolina and was home to Royal Governor Tryon and his family.
The North Carolina History Center is also located at Tryon Palace. The Museum of the American West celebrates the region’s history and takes visitors on an interactive journey through its development over nearly 300 years.
The museum store offers a unique souvenir to take home with you. To fully appreciate history, take some time to enjoy the landscape.
The Palace boasts 16 acres of stunning gardens that were designed to represent the formal garden style of 18th century Britain. There are trails created from manicured hedges and paths of beautiful, sweet-scented flowers which make for a fun-filled afternoon walk under the sun.
North Carolina History Center
The North Carolina History Center features interactive exhibits and displays that are enjoyed by everyone.
In addition to exhibits on the region’s history, New Bern has a number of historical artifacts lying around, including a statue of General Charles Cornwallis. There are also displays on the city’s maritime heritage and its ties to both North and South Carolina.
There are also events that take place at the center throughout the year.
We visited the “Tryon Palace Beer Festival” which was held at the palace during the annual tourist season. There were samples from many of North Carolina’s breweries as well as food trucks and live music.
When you visit, make sure to head outside and see the beautiful views of the Trent River.
Union Point Park
Union Point Park is a six-acre park that sits on the banks of the Neuse River. It is well-loved by tourists and locals for its countless amenities, including its spectacular waterfront views.
Union Point Park is a great place to bond with friends or family, doing all sorts of fun things on a wonderful day.
A picnic is a great way to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family. It’s also a great way to make long-lasting memories. Some things you can do on a picnic include grilling burgers, pushing children on swings, or taking a walk along the boardwalk.
The dock at the park has several activities you can do, like fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. Sometimes there are live music performances happening at the gazebo.
Carolina Creations
Carolina Creations is a gallery that was founded in 2017. It is officially known as the Carolina Creations Fine Art & Contemporary Gallery.
Take half an hour or so to peruse the many beautiful pieces of artwork at this art gallery with your friends.
Some amazing handicrafts can be found at museums, including ceramics, paintings, pottery, woodworks, glassworks, and other stunning creations.
The mall is also a great place to shop for artwork and souvenirs, such as mugs, jewelry, books, fabric, collectibles, and other miscellaneous items.
New Bern Farmers Market
The New Bern Farmers Market is a weekly event that features numerous stores selling fresh produce and local crafts. It is open each Saturday throughout the year.

Shackleford Banks Shelling & Wild Horse Expedition
The Shelling & Wild Horse Expedition offers eco-tours of the pristine Shackleford Banks, home to the famous wild horses of Shackleford Banks.
The free-roaming herd of horses is thought to have descended from Spanish horses that were shipwrecked on this island over 400 years ago and continue to survive as one of the last isolated groups of wild horses in the United States. The island on which they live is an ecological jewel of natural beauty and wind-shaped dunes, which naturalist guides lead visitors around, sharing their knowledge of and passion for the remote islands.
New Bern Firemen’s Museum
At the New Bern Fire Department Museum, you can learn about the history of this important local institution and see some of its most famous artifacts.
This museum is stocked with exhibits and artifacts, including original fire trucks and equipment, photographs and relics from the Great Fire of 1922, as well as unusual exhibits like a local icon, “Fred” the stuffed fire horse. The diversity of exhibits will impress museum patrons of all ages, and with a wide array of special programs and events throughout the year – like charity dinners or Junior Firefighter programs – everyone can have a blast while learning something new at this wholly fascinating New Bern attraction.
