Legendary Heavy Metal Bands

Music is, to put it mildly, a hugely influential and creative expression of not only the artist who has written and performed the song but also indirectly through the listener’s reactions to the tune and lyrics.

The wonderful thing about music is that there are so many different genres, and it is highly likely that, even amongst your core friendship group, one person may enjoy listening to jazz while another is a firm and dedicated pop music fan.

Heavy metal, however, is perhaps the most divisive of all, and it takes a special kind of person to truly appreciate the sound. For those who live and breathe heavy metal, this article is for you, as here are the three biggest and most legendary heavy metal bands that are still performing today.

1. Metallica

Firstly, even for people who have never even heard a single track from a single album, the vast majority of people in the world have at least heard of the heavy thrash metal band Metallica.

Many Metallica fans consistently state that, when watching interviews with the band members or even when meeting them after a gig, they all still behave and remain humble and have not let their success go to their heads.

2. Motley Crue

Another infamous heavy metal band in the world is Motley Crue, who were formed in 1981 in the center of Hollywood, LA, and were pioneers in androgynous dressing and more than a little hedonistic lifestyle.

The members of the band have come a long way since their humble beginnings in a cockroach-infested studio bedsit on the Sunset Strip and have endured a long, illustrious, and sometimes downright dangerous journey to the legendary status they will forever hold.

An excellent example of this is when, in the summer of 1987, Motley Crue’s bassist, Nikki Sixx, was declared legally dead for a full two minutes after passing out from an accidental drug overdose on the floor of a hotel bathroom.

Furthermore, an exciting piece of news you will likely want to immediately share with your fellow heavy metal-loving friends and family members is that the tickets for the Motley Crue tour are now on sale.

3. Iron Maiden

Another titan of the heavy metal genre is Iron Maiden, which was formed in London on Christmas Day way back in 1975 by their bassist Steve Harris. Iron Maiden chose their name from a seventies film adaption of an Alexandre Dumas novel, The Man in the Iron Mask.

Iron Maiden is constantly touring, both in the United States and internationally, and has a particularly dedicated fanbase who will already know the following interesting facts about the band:

  • Janick Gers (their guitarist) has a bachelor’s degree in sociology
  • Steve Harris was offered a trial for West Ham football club in his youth
  • Iron Maiden have, to date, released a whopping seventeen studio albums
  • The band was the first heavy metal group to play a gig in India
