Best Times to Visit Sequoia National Park
Best Times to Visit Sequoia National Park

No matter the time of year, Sequoia National Park is worth the trek. However, many travelers prefer to travel during the summer months because the weather is the most stable and the park is open 24/7. Snow chains or tires are required to safely navigate park roads during the winter months.During the winter, the park cuts down on its ranger-led programming and certain facilities reduce their hours. Some parts of the park, such as the Mineral King and Cedar Grove areas, close entirely due to access issues.

Best Times to Visit Mid-June to August

The most active time of the year at Sequoia is always the summertime. The shade that the magnificent trees offer is a welcome relief from the burning sun. While temperatures throughout the park vary depending on elevation, lows are typically in the 50s and highs are in the mid-70s in the sequoia groves this time of year.Best of all, during late May through early to mid-September, the Sequoia Shuttle transports visitors (for a fee) from nearby towns like Visalia and Three Rivers, up Highway 198 to the Giant Forest Museum in Sequoia National Park.

September to November

The leaves on the trees change their colors in the fall, marking the end of summer and the coming of winter. And with the leaves falling, the sun shines through the branches, warming up the wind with its golden rays. It’s not always the same: in the fall, the weather is unpredictable and can go from cool nights to warm days, and light snow is even possible in October. However, most parks begin to close in the fall and may reduce their hours or close altogether.

April to Mid-June

Due to the altitude and temperature difference, even April can see snow and stream water is running at a cool and fast pace. The upside to the weather in this time of year is the abundant wildflowers that will bloom in the foothills. Shuttle service will resume in late May.

December to March

Tire chains can be both an invaluable aid and a hindrance to drivers in winter weather. Though we never know the weather we’re going to get, preparation can lead to a memorable adventure. Some people report that the experience of walking through the magnificent sequoias blanketed in snow can be magical. When you’re in the mood for some winter time outdoor activity, consider this in your planning; in the winter, only the Sequoia National Park area in California is accessible via bus, and there are no bus routes into Kings Canyon National Park. The park updates conditions daily, so visit its website for current information.
